Special Issue

Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval

Call for Contributions

Meanwhile, several approaches have been developed that tackle specific problems of the retrieval process, e.g. feature extraction methods for multimedia data, query languages, problem specific similarity measures and interactive user interfaces. However, in most cases the user still needs several steps in order to find the searched objects. The main reasons for this are on the one hand, the users’ difficulty in specifying their interests in the form of a well defined query (which is partially caused by inappropriate user interfaces), on the other hand, the problem of extracting relevant features from the multimedia objects. Furthermore, user specific interests and the search context are usually neglected when objects are retrieved.

To improve today’s retrieval tools and thus the overall satisfaction of a user, it is necessary to develop methods that are able to support the user in the search process, e.g. by providing additional user adapted information about the search results as well as the data collection itself and especially by adapting the retrieval tool to the user’s needs and interests.

The goals of this special issue are to provide an overview of current activities in this area and to point out connections between the diverse involved research communities and research in AI. Therefore, the topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Technical Papers, Survey and Tutorial Papers

We solicit technical papers on substantial, original, and previously unpublished research. Submissions must not exceed 7 two-column pages in camera-ready KI Journal format (including illustrations). This corresponds to ca. 15 manuscript pages with 400 words (max. 6000 words or 40000 characters resp.). We also welcome survey and tutorial papers. All submitted contributions will be reviewed by at least two reviewers. Accepted contributions which cannot be considered in the Special Issue due to space limitations will be considered for publication in one of the next journal issues. Please note that technical papers may be in German or English.

Application Papers

The focus of this section is on applications. We especially welcome reports on applications in the area of Adaptive Multimedia Retrieval. The contributions should be about 3-4 pages in length in camera-ready KI Journal format (ca. 20.000 characters). Project summaries should be submitted as contributions to the service sections.
